Flu season ain’t over yet! Eric Y. Baden, M.D., FACEP, FAAEM ED Medical and Trauma Director Leading the way Thomas J. Nordwick, FACHE CEO/Administrator PEAK SEASON for the flu is De- cember through February, but it can last until May! Here is what you need to know to keep yourself and your loved ones well. 1. Prevention and treatment. The influenza vaccine is the best way to avoid getting sick with the flu. Any pharmacist can screen and administer the vaccine to ages 7 and older. For flu shots for children younger than 7 and other ques- tions, ask your medical provider. ●  ● Take acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen. Each one can safely be taken every six hours, and you can alternate between the two every three hours. ●  ● Drink plenty of fluids. Low- calorie Gatorade is a good choice. Regular sports drinks and juices are OK, too, but water them down to avoid excessive sugar intake. ●  ● Quarantine yourself to avoid spreading the flu. It is highly contagious. When you do go out, wear a mask, wash your hands very well and cough into your elbow. ●  ● Do not take antibiotics. The flu is a virus, so antibiotics will not help you get well. Antiviral medi- cations may decrease symptom duration and the flu’s spreading but aren’t a cure. 2. Go to the emergency depart- ment (ED) or call 911 if you experi- ence any of the following: ●  ● Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. ●  ● Significant dehydration—you are unable to keep down fluids and are starting to feel weak or are passing out. ●  ● Neurologic symptoms—you just don’t feel right and have a severe headache, difficulty thinking or neck stiffness. ●  ● No tome antibióticos.
