And he can’t thank Uvalde Memorial Hospital (UMH) enough for its expert care treating an emer- gency he faced—an attack of recurring diverticulitis. That attack was so severe it sent him to the emergency department doubled over in pain. Diverticulitis occurs when pouches that can form in the intestines become inflamed or infected. Sometimes it’s minor. But when severe, it can cause a massive infection or a ruptured bowel. Either can be deadly. “Had the ER team not been able to stabilize me, I may not be alive today,” Martin says. He was admitted to UMH, where antibiotic treatment successfully controlled a serious infection. Later, UMH surgeon Sandra E. Boenig, D.O., removed the diseased part of his colon. He hasn’t had an attack since. Martin, who moved to Uvalde from Houston, is struck by how exceptional the care at UMH is. “You can count on it,” he says. LOOKING BACK This wasn’t Martin’s first trip to the UMH emergency depart- ment. He’s made the trip twice before. Neither was related to diverticulitis, and neither was as serious. Still, there’s a com- mon thread. “You couldn’t be in better hands,” Martin says. “The care is truly excellent. I’m here to prove it.” What’s more, that quality care doesn’t stop at the emergency department. “It’s hospital-wide,” he adds. “The whole staff, from technicians all the way to doc- tors, is incredible. That’s not just because of their exper- tise. They treat you like family. You’re never a number here.” COMO CONTROLADOR de tránsito aéreo jubilado, Stan Martin sabe cómo manejar emergencias. A veces es leve. Pero cuando es grave, puede causar una infección masiva o una rup- tura de intestino. Ambas pueden ser mortales. “Si el equipo de la sala de emer- gencias no hubiera podido esta- bilizarme, tal vez hoy no estaría vivo”, dice Martin.
