Meeting milestones Speech and occupational therapies helped Jack get back on track MONICA ALMENDAREZ became concerned when her son, Jack, then 2 years old, wasn’t talking much. So did his primary care provider. Sometimes Jack would bite too. “He would get frustrated because he wasn’t able to express himself,” Monica says. Jack underwent testing and was found to have language and developmental delays. He wasn’t meeting milestones typical for his age. “Basically, it was like he was a late bloomer,” Monica says. Last summer, Jack’s provider suggested speech therapy (ST) and occupational therapy (OT) at Uvalde Memorial Hospital (UMH). “After these services, he really flourished,” his mom says. A HEALTHY PROGRESSION FORWARD Jack went to ST and OT at UMH a couple of times a week for four months. His vocabulary and ability to form sentences increased, as did his social interactions at home and at day care. The biting stopped too. “Over time you could see he was progressing,” Monica says. “That was reassuring to me.” Jack’s therapy activities often resembled playtime, Monica says. “He would go up to the therapists and hug them,” she says. “He was excited to be there.” The frustration Jack had been feeling decreased. “He’s more loving, and he doesn’t get as mad as he used to because he can express himself and say the things he needs to say,” Monica says. “Now he will tell us if he wants something. Or if he doesn’t want something, he’ll tell us. UNA PROGRESIÓN SALUDABLE Jack fue a ST y OT en UMH dos veces por semana durante cuatro meses. Su vocabulario y su capacidad para formar oraciones aumentaron, al igual que sus interacciones sociales en casa y en la guardería. Además, dejó de morder. “Con el tiempo, se podía ver su progreso”, dice Mónica. “Eso me tranquilizaba”. Muchas de las actividades de las terapias de Jack eran como estar jugando, dice Mónica. “Cuando saludaba a los terapeutas, los abrazaba”, dice. “Estaba contento de estar allí”. La frustración que Jack había estado sintiendo disminuyó. “Es más cariñoso y no se enfada como solía hacerlo porque puede expresarse y decir las cosas que necesita decir”, dice Mónica. “Ahora, si quiere algo, nos lo dice.
