If you’re scheduled to have your first mammogram—or your first in a long time— good for you. A screening mammogram, which is a type of x-ray, is an important test. It can detect breast cancer early, which is helpful when treating cancer. Women 40 and older should talk to their provider about getting regular mammograms. DURING YOUR MAMMOGRAM After you check in, you will put on a loosefitting top that opens in the front. You may also be given a cleansing wipe for the skin around your breasts and under your arms. It’s important to avoid wearing deodorant, antiperspirant, perfume, lotion or cream in these areas during the mammogram. They can appear as white spots on the x-ray. The mammography technologist may ask if you: ● Have ever had breast cancer, or if anyone in your family has ever had it. Don’t hesitate. Vaccinate. vaccines.gov Get ready for your mammogram ● Have noticed any recent changes in your breasts. ● Have breast implants. ● Think you may be pregnant. ● Are breastfeeding. Next, the technologist will guide you into the correct standing position in front of the x-ray machine. They will place one breast on the machine and press a plastic plate down on top of it. This compression is needed to get high-quality pictures. You’ll stand still while the technologist takes the x-ray. They may also ask you to hold your breath. Each x-ray takes about 10 to 15 seconds. Then you’ll repeat the procedure for the other breast. Mammograms are uncomfortable for most women and painful for some. However, it’s over quickly, and any discomfort usually subsides shortly afterward. Your breasts might feel more sensitive if you’re having, or are about to have, your period. AFTER THE EXAM You should receive your results from the radiologist who reads your x-rays within a couple of weeks. The radiologist also will send a copy to your doctor. If the radiologist finds anything abnormal, they will ask you to return for a diagnostic mammogram. These extra pictures can help the radiologist understand what the abnormality is.
